English: Reading

Subject Intent

Skills in language and communication are essential to all areas of learning. It is, therefore, vital that children are given every opportunity to reach their potential in these skills, through an excellent standard of English teaching embedded across the curriculum and through varied and interesting opportunities throughout the school.

In our school:

• High quality teaching of synthetic phonics  develops children's skills and  confidence in accessing the wider curriculum.
• English skills - reading, writing and speaking and listening - are embedded across the curriculum.
• A love of reading is nurtured.
• Reading is regarded as purposeful and enjoyable because it relates to real life experiences as well as offering opportunities to escape.
• Through their reading, children will encounter and be challenged by ideas from experiences which they would not normally be exposed to beyond their own community.
• Writing is regarded as purposeful by all children, and is enjoyed by the majority because writing opportunities are sought that reflect and extend interests.   
• Steps to success in writing are clear to, and achievable for, each child.
• Children are confident presenters of their own ideas. Talk is actively developed in lessons in order for children to develop a rich vocabulary and confidence in their own speech, with both peers and adults and in a variety of formal and informal situations.
