Read our Music Development Summary here.

Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity.

A high- quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.

Our pupils can use their voice and instruments creatively and expressively with increasing accuracy and fluency. They can listen to a range of high-quality music and musical styles with attention to detail and discuss and critique what they hear, with reference to the various dimensions of music. They can compose, in isolation and in collaboration, and perform confidently in front of an audience. The Barton Park Musician has a strong understanding of music across history, genres, styles and traditions.

In our school:

  • We use the Sing Up! Curriculum.
  • Objectives across all strands of music revisited and embedded within and across year groups and key stages to ensure cumulative fluency.
  • Pupils have repeated exposure to a wide range of high-quality music, across a range of eras, genres, styles and traditions, to ensure a broad musical education through music lessons, singing assemblies and through entry/exit music in all assemblies.
  • Pupils are given opportunities to develop in all aspects of music to encourage creativity and self-confidence as a musician.
  • Pupils are taught music through singing and non-tuned percussive instruments in EYFS; In KS1 they are introduced to tuned percussion; in KS2 they are introduced to tuned instruments.
  • In Year 3 and 4, pupils are taught to play an instrument through whole class ensemble tuition, over one year. This could be ukulele, guitar or Djembe drums.
  • Additional private tuition is offered via the Oxfordshire music service within school time.
