Subject Intent

Mathematics is a creative and highly interconnected discipline that has been developed over centuries, providing the solution to some of history’s most intriguing problems.

It is essential to everyday life, critical to science, technology and engineering, and necessary for financial literacy and most forms of employment. A high-quality mathematics education provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, solve problems as well as an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

In our school:

  • High quality teaching, using the White Rose and NCETM Maths Fluency curriculum,  develops the skills and confidence of all children and ensures good coverage of all elements of maths.
  • Cross curricular opportunities to practise maths skills in purposeful ways across the curriculum are built into learning sequences in each year group.
  • Confidence is built up by using concrete resources, followed by pictorial representations and finally abstract problems.
  • Fluency in maths is supported by an additional short-burst session in class 4x weekly in KS1 and 2x weekly in KS2.
  • Children become confident in reasoning skills through regular opportunities in lessons to apply what they know to problem solving.
  • Steps to success in maths are clear to, and achievable for, every child.
  • We do not group or set in maths, ensuring all children have access to the right level of challenge for them in each lesson.
  • A love of number, reasoning and problem solving is encouraged by linking mathematical concepts to real life experiences and the wider curriculum, using a range of resources and examples that are relatable to our children in their everyday lives.
